Onshape Release 1.205 Adds In‑App AI Advisor, Configurable Variable Studios & Enhanced Simulation Capabilities

Onshape’s 1.205 release brings a major enhancement to its cloud-native CAD and PDM platform, with the introduction of a built-in AI assistant, more dynamic configuration controls, and simulation tools better suited to thin and complex geometries.

AI Advisor Now Integrated In‑App

The newly introduced Onshape AI Advisor is a contextual AI assistant embedded directly in the design environment. It enables users to ask questions in natural language and receive targeted answers based on Onshape’s comprehensive library of documentation, tutorials and engineering best practices.

Key characteristics of the AI Advisor include:
  • Grounded responses based on trusted Onshape content, with no access to user data or proprietary models.
  • Smart design support, helping users with commands, syntax, modeling strategies and recommendations such as how to create a curvature continuous boundary surface.
  • Administrator controls in Professional and Enterprise plans, allowing organization-wide enablement or restriction.
  • Privacy-focused design using Amazon Bedrock, with the AI engine isolated from customer-specific content.
  • Practical usage scenarios like expression writing, feature selection or syntax clarification.
Future versions are expected to expand these capabilities to include expression generation, scripting and even model editing, though the current focus remains on guided advisory support.

Configurable Variable Studios

Variable Studios now support named configurations of variable sets. Users can toggle between these sets within Part Studios and Assemblies, allowing a single model to represent multiple variants without duplicating geometry or using complex logic trees. This streamlines design processes in parametric and product family scenarios.

Improved Simulation for Thin and High Aspect Ratio Geometry

Simulation enhancements target known challenges with thin-walled and elongated geometries. Updates to linear static and modal analysis deliver:
  • Improved meshing and solver stability for thin parts such as brackets or enclosures
  • More accurate stress and modal predictions for parts with high length-to-thickness ratios
  • Greater confidence in real-world applications like structural frames and sheet metal designs

Other Notable Enhancements

Additional improvements across the Onshape platform include:
  • Insert dialogs now allow selection of the active or default configuration of parts and assemblies.
  • Custom properties can now be used as search criteria for folders, publications and projects.
  • Drawing updates include shaded break views and a one-click command to remove all inspection items.
  • Render Studio enhancements include right-side docking for the asset library panel, new surface texture projection tools and workspace-wide referencing of assets such as HDRIs and textures without version locks.
  • Enterprise users can now create secure external connections with other organizations and set permissions to restrict data exports from the platform.

Strategic Outlook

The AI Advisor marks a foundational step in Onshape’s broader AI strategy — enabling on-the-fly guidance and knowledge delivery without disrupting established workflows. Together with improved configuration and simulation support, this release equips engineering teams with tools to design smarter, faster and more collaboratively in the cloud.
