Siemens and ModuleWorks Add Physics-Based Toolpath Optimization to NX CAM

Siemens and ModuleWorks have strengthened their long-standing collaboration by integrating a new set of physics-based machining technologies into Siemens NX CAM.

Available as plugins for NX CAM within the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio, the solutions bring automated roughing, turning, feed-rate optimization and manufacturing-data export capabilities into the CAM programming environment. The companies say the integration will help manufacturers improve machining performance while supporting a more connected digital workflow from design and programming through production.

The expanded offering includes four ModuleWorks technologies.

  • VoluMill provides science-based roughing strategies intended to increase material removal rates, shorten machining cycles and extend cutting-tool life across a range of materials.
  • VoluTurn automates turning operations, reducing the need for manual CAD preparation while helping control insert wear and prevent excessive tool engagement.
  • FeedControl applies physics-based simulation to optimize feed rates according to factors such as material properties and machine characteristics. The technology is designed to maintain more consistent cutting conditions and improve overall machining efficiency.
  • The MDES Exporter automatically generates standardized information for tools, fixtures and parts from Siemens NX. This data can then be used in simulation, collision-avoidance and other digital manufacturing systems that support the MDES format.

By making the technologies available within NX CAM, Siemens and ModuleWorks aim to give users a more unified programming experience without requiring them to move between separate applications. Local installation also allows manufacturers to deploy the plugins within secured internal networks.

Expected benefits include shorter production cycles, longer tool life, simplified CAM programming and faster implementation of digital-thread initiatives. The integration is also intended to make advanced machining optimization more accessible to programmers with different levels of experience.

Siemens said the collaboration supports its strategy of building an open manufacturing ecosystem through Siemens Xcelerator. The company expects the combined roughing, turning, feed-rate and data-management capabilities to help manufacturers improve productivity and accelerate digital transformation.

ModuleWorks described the expanded integration as an end-to-end approach to process optimization within the native NX CAM workflow. The company said it will continue working with manufacturing technology partners to support increasingly automated and connected production environments.
